How to Rest in The Lord for Your Peace

Dearly beloved in Christ,

The just shall live by faith,” (Habakkuk 2:4, Romans 1:17, Galatians 3:11, Hebrews 10:38).  The justified in Christ live my faith not works. It is faith alone, in Christ alone that we are delivered. This should give us great peace; for faith is a gift from God, as all do not have it. But, faith is attainable for those who are seeking it.  Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word or God,” (Romans 10:17).

Is your faith in the work of the Lord unchangeable, unwavering?  Is it transformational?  In what way has your life changed as your fellowship with the Lord matures?  Are you a committed believer? Many cannot answer these questions positively because they have not rested in the Lord. We must test ourselves to whether we are in the faith.

Your life as a Christian should be transformational.  One of my favorite verses in Romans is this: “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God,” (Romans 12:2). We must be transformed by the renewing of our mind.

Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you —unless indeed you are disqualified.       2 Corinthians 13:5

What does it mean to be disqualified?  The Apostle Paul used the word “disqualified” to mean, “Is your faith genuine or have you fallen to become reprobates, imposters, turning away and becoming worthless to God?” If we are not getting closer to God, we are getting further from Him. Did you know that Satan fears the committed Christian? Yet, Satan relishes the uncommitted Christian, the lukewarm Christian, the Christian whose desires are turned to carnality and not holiness. I have heard pastors talk about carnal Christians. But is there such a thing as a carnal Christian?  No. If a person has no desire to be holy or obey the commandments of God, they are not a Christian no matter what they call themselves. This is not legalism but a desire of the heart.

For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

—Romans 8:6

Many call themselves “Christian” but are false, imposters, pretenders, and do not know God; they have no desire to really know Him and to follow Him, to love Him. Are we not a new creation in the Lord? As a new creation, with new desires (for God and His knowledge) we should want and desire to be obedient to our Father in Heaven.  We take His commands seriously if we are indeed true. If we are indeed Christian.  In 2 Corinthians 5:17, Paul writes to the Christians in Corinth:

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

Our old life of sin and rebellion has passed away, for we are a new creation in Christ Jesus. We do not follow any religion, we follow Christ. Our old man has died, being crucified on the cross with Jesus (Romans 6:6). We are born anew. The Christian is born twice and dies once. The children of Satan are born once but die twice (Revelation 20:14-15).  What is the second death for unbelievers, those pretenders?

But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”      Revelation 21:8

The believer is dead to sin, and the children of the devil are dead in sin. The children of God are the light of the world and the children of the devil are the children of darkness. There is no such thing as a carnal Christian. A Christian cannot be carnal for any length of time. If there is no desire to obey, to repent (change of mind, change of direction) from sin and to be obedient and holy, there is no conversion—it is a false conversion. Do not be deceived as many are.  It is true; we can be as disobedient and wicked as we want to be or we can be as holy as we want to be. I choose holiness. Will you?  It is easy to be holy when we put our rest in the Lord. He gives us strength and love and life; and we receive it in faith.

Also, the believer bares good fruit. “You will know them by their fruits,” (Matthew 7:16-20).  This is evidence of a true believer. We must test ourselves. Are we baring good fruit for the kingdom of God or are we fruitless?  What have you done for God? Are you pleasing to Him?  Is your heart on things above or are you living for this world and its temporary pleasures?  It is easy to get distracted in this life for a season, but the true Christian follows Christ and obeys His commandments not for a season but unto death.

Are you a believer whose love for the Lord grows as the days and years pass, strengthening your resolve and commitment to the Lord?  Do you yield your will to the Lord?  Do you have days where you feel off balance and even disconnected, not having it all together?  Perhaps the mind has become stuffed with futile information of the world, or then again, maybe God has been neglected, cast aside for the world and its carnal pleasures. Because you have not been in the Lord, the attacks of the evil one have progressed, whereby deceptions have entered your mind. Having fellowship with the world and neglecting fellowship with God leads to disharmony for the children of God.  Have we neglected to offer our bodies on the altar to become a living sacrifice to the Lord? Let’s turn to the Lord for our rest, and fear Him, keep His commandments, for this is man’s all; this is his duty (Ecclesiastics 12:13-14).  Everything comes down to our love for God. If we love Him, we will obey Him; we will want more of Him.

Could it be fatigue or burnout, the result of lack of sleep or even poor food choices has put us off balance? Being overworked, without adequate rest or time away to rest the mind and body could be the cause of fatigue, mental and physical. Resting the mind and body is extremely important, but resting in Christ is essential.  How many times do we have to hear “It is written, man cannot live by bread only, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God,” (Matthew 4:4)?  Could it be that we are off balanced and disconnected because we have not been in the Word of God, filling our spirit with His knowledge, with His promises, and His blessings?  Have we forgotten to love?  Have we set aside a tender heart for others? Are we missing the anointing because we are not serious about God? Are we following the world and its lusts and not the Lord and His holiness?  Resting in faith and putting all of our cares and anxieties on Him is what allows us to move forward and to move forward with peace. Can we say: “Oh, how I love You, my Lord, fill me with Your knowledge?”

Keeping on with the good news, we trust God and rely on Him even when we do not understand. God wants our trust; He wants out commitment. He wants our love.  He wants every part of us. And we must, in trust and in love, submit every part of ourselves to Him.  Jesus said in Matthew 11:28-29:

Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

He is gentle and lowly in heart, meaning, He is humble, relying on the Father for instruction and learning. Jesus said, “learn from Me.” Let’s learn from Him.  To be humble is to be teachable. We humble ourselves to the Lord to be teachable and to receive the power and authority which Christ has given us to heal and be delivered from all trouble. Since we are already healed (by His stripes [1 Peter 2:24]), we must receive the power and authority Christ has offered us to appropriate that which has been provided in the atonement, deliverance from all oppression, sickness and death.  We rest in the Lord, for we have been redeemed and reconciled.

Jesus gives us rest for soul and body. When our soul is at peace, our body will also be at peace; and nothing will bother us.  We have peace in good times and in troubling times because the Lord is always with us.

As with many, I spend more hours per day working than most. But I also take a few breaks of one to three hours each day to get fresh air and sun. I also take lots of ten or fifteen minute breaks to rest my mind when reading, studying and writing, which I do daily. I have hundreds of articles and essays (thousands of pages), I have written which have not been published, going back over twenty years. But this does not deter me from writing more.  I enjoy it. I read, I study and I learn. One day they will all be published and many will end up in books. It is my rest in the Lord that allows me to continue to learn and improve my knowledge of the Lord, to get closer to the Him and the Holy Spirit and to depend on them.  I have a great desire to learn about God and I am grateful He has revealed Himself to me.  Draw near to God and He will draw near to you,” (James 4:8).  I believe resting in the Lord has allowed me, and will allow you to be more productive in all things—because “all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose,” (Romans 8:28).  This might include your business or work, building relationships with believing brothers and sisters and family; and above all, developing a mature relationship with the Lord. Resting in the Lord has given me patience. In fact, resting in the Lord has given me and will give you all the fruit of the Spirit:  love, peace, joy, patience, goodness, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control.

A healthy life is a life built around Christ, being never without Jesus. Since God is love, a healthy life is a life build around love. Many believe I am strange because I tell people who I barely know or meet for the first time, that I love them.  But I do love them and I want them to know the Lord and rest in Him. He should be the center of your life. When your relationship with Him is solid, your life is solid. When we abide in Him, His love abides in us, giving us strength, peace, rest and life. We are nothing without the Lord, so let’s never be without Him. For, “we can do all things through the One who empowers us within,” (Philippians 4:13). The Holy Spirit of God, who lives in every believer, is empowered.  Many do not know that Christ’s power flows through them. And many professed Christians live with little true peace or power. They worry, complain and grumble, which is sinful. God does not like grumbling.  He guides us when we call upon Him. This is why we should always keep Christ with us.  Keeping Him in your heart and the Word on your mind and lips daily will benefit you greatly in everything you do. This goes for restoring health in spirit, soul and body.

In Hebrews 4:10, we read the teaching of rest, that our rest is in the Lord and what He did for us.  This is not the Sabbath rest of the Jews:

For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.

We cease from our works as the Lord ceased from His work at creation (Genesis 2:2).  The Lord created the world, the animals, the fish, the birds and plants.  He was finished and rested. There was nothing more to do. He created the animals and plants to procreate as He did with the human race.

The disobedient and the hard hearted shall not [cannot] enter into the rest because they have not believed in the only Son of God.

God created the world in six days and the seventh He rested. He was finished. It wasn’t that God was tired, but I believe He was still, taking a step back to look and enjoy what He had created.  Maybe, we should do the same, be still, and take a look at what God has given us in Christ. Our rest, as believers is in the New Covenant rest on the Lord. He is our Sabbath. Our Sabbath is not Saturday, as for the Jews or Sunday. Our day off to rest is every day because Jesus gives us, the believer, our rest; He gives us our peace. And what is peace?  Peace is contentment knowing God. If you truly know God, you have peace. You have peace in all things because your rest is in Him.

The Lord did it all for us. God has already healed us spiritually and physically.  Now, in faith, we rest in the work of Jesus and all His promises as the obedient children of God.  This is the Sabbath rest.  When Adam and Eve were in the Garden they had this rest because God had completed everything He wanted to do. They were in obedience to God and had rest and peace. But once they disobeyed God their rest and peace left. It was exchanged for shame and guilt. And they were put out of the garden.

Also, resting, or giving a day to God completely for restoration of our mind and body is good. We work six days and on the seventh we rest, devoting this day to the Lord, for love and worship. But Sunday is the first day of the week. We give the first to God, as we give our first fruits. Is your favorite day of the week Sunday?  Mine is. I love to spend the whole day with God in praise and worship, and with godly, likeminded believers, “not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together,” (Hebrews 10:25).   Jesus said “The Sabbath was made for man and man for the Sabbath” (Mark 2:27).  It is for our own good to rest in the Lord every moment because He completed what He came to accomplish. He finished His mission. The believer, who has been chosen, also has a mission—to become a living sacrifice, to do the will of God.

If we are sick we rest in faith for healing. Jesus healed us. “By whose stripes we were healed” (1 Peter 2:24).

You have a future and a hope; but only when you are well to carry out God’s will for your life. Thus says the Lord:

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.  (Jeremiah 29:11)

We have peace with God when we receive Jesus as Lord and Savior, yielding our life to Him [Romans 5:1].  He is the prince of peace.

In Philippians 4:6-7, we ought not be anxious for anything:

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Did you know when you yield to the Lord and rest in Him the peace of God will guard your heart and mind and surpasses all understanding?  It is true. God promises us peace.

Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.    Romans 5:1

To rest in the Lord we must walk in the spirit and not the flesh. Paul gives us the works of the flesh in the book of Galatians 5:19-21:

Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies,   envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

If we practice these evils, we will never have peace and we could never rest in the Lord. And those who practice these sins, naturally, will not inherit the kingdom of God.

The unsaved have no peace. Many of the unbelievers I come across seem to be afraid of death and sickness; they are idolaters, among other evils, always rushing, worried, anxious, nervous and full of anger without cause; they are blasphemous and have filthy mouths. They are frustrated and restless. Restlessness is a sign of demon influence or even possession. People who are rushed, never slowing down, are mean, selfish people. They do not have time for anyone because their life is puffed up in themselves with selfish ambitions. They hate, believing lies, never coming to know the truth. Do you know people like this?  I do. They appear to always be busy, yet nothing worthwhile gets done. They take freely but give nothing. They force their will upon others. They manipulate others with lies and deceptions trying to take joy and peace from those who rest in Christ. They are the agents of Satan—yet are oblivious to the fact. Manipulation, domination and intimidation are their trademarks, which is witchcraft. I see this with woman with a Jezebel spirit. They blame others for all their problems and they grumble then rage when truth is not their created and imaginary truth. They have no self-control over their emotions and blame others for their rage. This is the opposite of God and the godly—those who give in love.  God’s children give. Satan’s children take and keep taking. It isn’t that they won’t give, they cannot give. It is not within them to give. To truly give with the heart is love. They cannot give because they have no love to give; they are filled with resentment and hate.  And if they give, they give to futile causes like “Save the jellyfish.” They will take love but cannot give love.  Everything the unsaved do, including the false Christian, is futile, worthless (Romans 1:21). God does not see it—it counts for nothing.  Their motive is not God, but self.  They are unthankful, ungrateful, blasphemers and do not know or care for the promises of God nor do they acknowledge His benefits (Psalm 103:2): For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace” (Romans 8:6).  Let us walk in the spirit and not the world. If we want life and peace and rest, we fill ourselves with the Lord and He will give us our rest when we rest in Him.

My hope is that you are a true disciple of Christ because it is the will of God that His children have the desire to fulfill the works which Jesus did and more. But we must not forget, we are not saved by our good works, but we are saved for good works. We must be more than a threat to Satan and his kingdom. A threat is a committed Christian. The devil does not fear an uncommitted Christian. Most Christian’s are uncommitted. However, more than a threat is a committed disciple, a healer of soul and body, who uses the authority given by Christ. Here’s the rundown to a quadruple threat to the devil. We must be a (1) prayer warrior; he gets things done through answered prayer; (2) minister of the Word (a minister is a servant); he serves people when they are broken; (3) true and committed disciple; he is constantly learning and teaching what God has revealed to him; and (4) healer, appropriating the power and authority given according to the Word of God and loving the Lord and others by fulfilling God's will as a child of God.  He is a living sacrifice. We reveal God's truth to the lost and to the seekers, each and every day until we have left this world to be with Him and the saints before us. We become overcomers.

You must believe that full deliverance is real in this world, and what Jesus has accomplished what we must now appropriate with unwavering faith and belief that we are delivered spiritually and physically, by His blood, by His atoning death. Was He not the Lamb of God?  He voluntarily received the punishment that was ours unto himself.  His blood was shed for us on the cross, and by His resurrection, we have, through our faith in Him, life eternal and healing in this life. Physical healing is in the atoning death of Christ. It did not cease with the first century disciples. Christ gave us our marching orders. It is now time for us to carry them out. Let us rest in the Lord by knowing the truth, by filling ourselves with Him—for the truth shall make us free—free indeed. Free from what?  Free from death and condemnation. And free from the lies of the enemy. Our old man (our sinfulness) is dead having been crucified on the cross with Jesus. How do we rest in the Lord for our peace?  We trust every part of our life to Christ. We hand ourselves over to Him and become a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1). We are dead to sin and alive in Christ (Romans 6:11).

Prayer

Our Father in heaven,

Thank you for choosing me, for revealing truth to me.

Forgive me, Father, of all my iniquities, that I have sinned against You willingly and unwilling. Cleanse me of secret fault. Thank you, Father, for forgiving me.

I belong to You. I give my life to you, every part of my life: my relationships, my health, my finances, my business [job or career].

Train me, teach me, fill me with wisdom and knowledge and use me to grow the kingdom of God.  I know as I seek Your kingdom and Your righteousness, You will provide me with everything I need.

I know all things work together for good, for those who love You, those called according to Your purpose.

And I know that all things fade away, but Your Word stands forever.

Thank you, Father. I bless You, the Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth.

In Jesus’ name I confess this, Amen.

I would like to leave you with one last thought:

The only love you get to keep is the love you give away.

Be generous with your love to the Lord and those who are unloved, those having been set aside:  the old, the orphan, the widow, the oppressed and the poor in spirit. Put your rest in the Lord.  He will never forsake you. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and peace will be yours.

Grace, mercy and peace be yours in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ,

Seres kez gou dam (Armenian): “I give you my love”,
