How to Evangelize Using Gospel Tracts
by Mihran Kulhanjian
Evangelism is the act of sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with others, and one of the most effective tools for this purpose is the gospel tract. A gospel tract is a small printed booklet or pamphlet that explains the message of salvation through Jesus Christ. These tracts are inexpensive (and many times free for the asking), easy to distribute, and capable of reaching people in places where a spoken conversation may not be possible or hindered. When used wisely and prayerfully, gospel tracts can become powerful instruments for spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ.
The first step in evangelizing with gospel tracts is understanding the message they contain. A gospel tract should clearly explain humanity’s need for salvation, the love of God, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the importance of repentance and faith. Before distributing tracts, Christians should read them carefully to ensure they are biblically accurate and understandable. A believer who knows the message well will be more confident when sharing it with others.
Prayer is also an essential part of tract evangelism. Christians should pray for guidance, courage, and opportunities to reach people. They should also pray that the Holy Spirit will prepare the hearts of those who receive the tracts. Evangelism is not simply about handing out papers; it is about sharing God’s truth with compassion and sincerity. Prayer reminds believers that true conversion comes from God—it is supernatural—not from human effort. The tract giver is a messager of God—distributing His Word.
When distributing gospel tracts, kindness and respect are extremely important. People are more likely to accept a tract when it is offered with a friendly attitude and genuine concern. A simple greeting, smile, or short conversation can make a significant difference.
For example, a Christian might say:
“Good afternoon I have a beautiful message for you.” Or, “Hello, I’d like to give you something encouraging to read.” Such an approach is polite and non-confrontational. The goal is not to pressure people but to lovingly present the message of Christ.
There are many practical places where gospel tracts can be distributed. We can hand them out in public areas such as parks, shopping centers, bus stops, beach, and college campuses. Others leave them in waiting rooms (Doctor’s offices, etc.), restaurants, or community bulletin boards where permitted. Some believers include tracts in letters, gift bags, or acts of charity. Christian business owners can place them on the counter and in take-away bags. Use your imagination on where to place tracts if you cannot hand them out to individuals.
Personal testimony can also strengthen tract evangelism. After giving someone a tract, a Christian may briefly share how faith in Christ has changed his or her life. Personal experiences make the gospel more relatable because they show the practical impact of God’s grace. Even a short testimony about finding peace, forgiveness, or purpose through Jesus can encourage someone to read the tract more carefully. The Apostle Paul used his personal testimony on numerous times. Your personal testimony is irrefutable; it is your story—nobody else has your story.
Another important aspect of tract evangelism is being prepared for questions. Some people may want to discuss spiritual matters after receiving a tract. Christians should be ready to answer common questions about salvation, the Bible, and the Christian faith. They do not need to know everything, but they should respond honestly and lovingly. Maturity in Christ helps, but you should also have a Bible (or a cellphone where you can retrieve the Bible) with you to draw from Scripture when needed. If a question cannot be answered, an offer to continue the conversation later should be encouraged. Also, Bible study groups, churches and individual discipleship or discipleship classes should be available.
Consistency is also valuable in evangelism. Many people may reject a tract or show little interest at first, but Christians should not become discouraged. The Bible teaches that believers are called to plant and water seeds of faith, while God brings spiritual growth. The tract makes an introduction. A tract handed out today may be read weeks or even years later. Sometimes a single pamphlet can change a person’s life forever. Many tracts, booklets pass through many hands. Booklets are less likely to be thrown in the trash. A high quality booklet, business card tract or brochure will likely be read by many.
Modern technology has expanded the possibilities for gospel tracts as well. Digital tracts can now be shared through email, text messages, and social media. Online evangelism allows believers to reach people across the world instantly. However, whether printed or digital, the message should remain centered on Christ and communicated with love.
Quick Overview
The Biblical Basis for Sharing the Gospel
Christians use gospel tracts as one method of obeying Christ’s command to spread the gospel.
Jesus said:
“Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.” — Mark 16:15
The Apostle Paul wrote:
“Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”
— Romans 10:17
Scripture also teaches that God’s Word has power:
“So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty.”
— Isaiah 55:11
Many Christians view tracts as a practical way to plant seeds of faith by sharing Scripture and the gospel message with others.
How to Use Gospel Tracts Effectively?
1. Pray Before Evangelizing
Prayer helps prepare your heart and asks God to guide the conversation.
“Continue steadfastly in prayer.”— Colossians 4:2
Ask God for wisdom, boldness, compassion, and opportunities to speak with people.
2. Know the Gospel Yourself
Before handing out tracts, it helps to understand the gospel clearly so you can answer questions if someone responds.
A simple gospel explanation often includes:
- God loves humanity
- Sin separates people from God
- Jesus died and rose again
- Salvation comes through faith in Christ by God’s grace
One commonly used verse is:
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
— Romans 6:23
3. Choose Clear and Biblically Sound Tracts
Not all tracts are equally helpful. Good tracts should:
- Clearly explain salvation
- Include Scripture
- Be respectful and understandable
- Avoid manipulation or unnecessary fear tactics
- Point people toward Christ rather than arguments
Many churches and ministries create gospel tracts for different age groups and cultures.
Personal Conversations
One of the best methods is using a tract as part of a real conversation.
For example: You could say: “This is for you.” Or “I have a beautiful message for you.”
- Introduce yourself
- Good afternoon. Did you get one of these?
- Do you believe in the afterlife?
- How much do you know about Jesus Christ?
- Offer the tract naturally
- Ask if they would like prayer for (healing)
The Apostle Peter encouraged believers:
“Always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.”
— 1 Peter 3:15
Gentleness and respect are essential.
Street Evangelism
Anywhere there are lots of people is a good place to distribute tracts. To reiterate, public places such as parks, shopping centers, grocery stores, beach areas or community events are natural places sharing the Word of God. When doing this:
- Be respectful of local laws and businesses
- Avoid aggressive behavior
- Respect personal boundaries
- Focus on kindness rather than confrontation
Jesus taught:
“Blessed are the peacemakers.”— Matthew 5:9
Leaving Tracts in Appropriate Places
Some believers leave tracts in waiting rooms, libraries, laundromats, counters of any retail business or with tips at restaurants. If doing this, it should be done thoughtfully and respectfully.
A common criticism is leaving tracts instead of proper payment or generosity. Christians are called to act honorably:
“So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them.”
— Matthew 7:12
Using Tracts During Outreach Events
Churches often use tracts during:
- Community service projects
- Mission trips
- Holiday events
- Homeless outreach
- Youth ministries
In these settings, tracts are often combined with acts of compassion and service.
What Makes Tract Evangelism Effective?
Simplicity
Tracts present the gospel clearly and briefly.
Accessibility
People can read them later in private and at their own pace.
Scripture-Based Content
Many tracts include direct Bible verses, allowing readers to encounter scripture personally.
Hebrews 4:12 says:
“For the word of God is living and active.”— Hebrews 4:12
Continued Impact
Even if a person does not respond immediately, they may keep the tract and revisit it later.
Be Friendly
Evangelism should never involve pressure or harassment.
“Let your speech always be gracious.”— Colossians 4:6
Do Not Argue—Present the Message
We present the truth of God’s Word. We do not argue. We let the Holy Spirit lead us to form the words that proceed from our mouth.
Paul instructed Timothy:
“And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone.”
— 2 Timothy 2:24
People should be treated with dignity, compassion, and sincere care.
A tract is a tool, not a substitute for genuine Christian character, prayer, and discipleship.
Following Up After Giving a Tract
Sometimes people will ask questions or want to learn more. Be prepared to:
- Share your testimony
- Explain the gospel more fully
- Pray with them
- Invite them to church or Bible study
- Encourage them to read the Bible seriously
Jesus told His disciples not only to proclaim the gospel message, but also to make disciples. A disciple is a pupil and student for life.
“Teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.”
— Matthew 28:20
Summing Up
Gospel tracts are a simple yet powerful method of evangelism. They allow Christians to spread the message of salvation in a clear and accessible way. Effective tract evangelism requires prayer, kindness, wisdom, and perseverance. By combining the written message of the gospel with genuine Christian love, believers can reach many people and help lead them toward a relationship with Jesus Christ.
